Playing poker for money

Winning the World Series of Poker is probably the dream of every poker fan, but did you know that you don’t have to be a tournament pro to make money from poker? Playing poker for money is something that any patient skilled player can do.
To reach the level of being able to play poker for money you need to first pick a poker variant to specialise in. Texas Hold’em poker is probably the most popular variant, but it is perfectly possible to excel at other variants such as Omaha hi poker. It’s probably best to just stick to one variant in the early days. Once you’ve mastered one, you can broaden your horizons and explore other poker games.
When you sit down to play online, make sure that you have a firm budget in mind. Set yourself a limit – your “bankroll”. This is the maximum amount you are willing to spend this week / month / year on online poker. Make sure that you pick your table based on the size of your bankroll. If you have only $200, there’s no sense sitting down at a $5 table – a couple of band hands will put you out of the game. You’re much more likely to come out on top if you play at a lower stakes table until you build your bankroll up a bit.
The most successful players are the ones that are selective about their hands. Staying in a hand where you are weak is just throwing money away. If you want to play poker for money, then make sure you pick your battles carefully.
Finally, as with all other games – poker should be fun first and foremost. If you aren’t having fun, walk away and come back another day. Your sanity and your wallet will thank you for it.
